Theatre on the manor lawn

Cogges' popular outdoor theatre returned to the farm with two fantastic productions on the manor lawn. Love is in the air as Witney's own Truth Told Theatre performed Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' in July; and, award winning touring theatre company, Illyria, returns with Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta 'The Gondoliers' on 5th September.

Truth Told Theatre is a new venture for local thespian and fan of 'The Bard', Louise Taney, who directed and performed in Romeo and Juliet for three evenings. Thanks to Witney MP, Councillor Charlie Maynard, for coming along, and said: "For never was a story of more woe, Than this of Juliet and her Romeo." An amazing production of Romeo and Juliet at Cogges Manor Farm last night! Great actors brought together by Truth Told Theatre. Lots of humour too. We loved it. A big thank you to everyone who made it happen."

Fear not, there will be another chance to enjoy theatre on the lawn, as the fantastic Illyria return with Gilbert and Sullivan's classic, The Gondoliers!

The Gondoliers with Illyria

Cogges is the new Venice (our summer weather aside) in September. Illyria are well known for their innovative, quality performances over the last 30 plus years from rock operas to children's theatre, alternative classics as well as a reputable Shakespeare repertoire. They have been performing Gilbert and Sullivan's operettas since 2011, and are now bringing a touch of venetian charm to the farm!

Expect enchanting rendition that promises an evening of laughter, music, and pure entertainment. With catchy melodies and witty lyrics, Illyria brings the vivacious characters to life, captivating audiences with their impeccable comedic timing and exuberant performances. Another tale of love – as the plot thickens and the absurdity reaches its peak, love triumphs and the gondoliers discover that happiness lies not in noble titles but in the simplicity of true love.

“At its best, theatre is shared storytelling. And to experience this in the open air is uniquely special.” says Artistic Director Oliver Gray. “Outdoors, with good company, good food and a glass of something bubbly is a much less formal way to enjoy theatre. There’s no better way to celebrate British summertime.” We recommend a brolly just in case!

This year’s Illyria performance will be on 5th September – book your tickets. Visitors can bring their own low-back chair or blanket, and are advised to dress for the weather! There will be a bar with snacks and ice-cream, and the play is suitable for younger children to come along with their families.

Truth Told Theatre

Hailed as his greatest tragedy, this tale of ‘star-crossed lovers’ from two feuding families still resonates today. Covering the themes of love, hate, grief, remorse and more, 'Romeo and Juliet' thrilled audiences with an action-packed show. Director Louise Taney's passion for Shakespeare is the driving force for her theatre company, where she has a mission for everyone to enjoy his plays!

Louise says “I love the unique setting of Cogges: it’s in a town and yet as soon as you step into the grounds it’s like you’re in a different time from a bygone era, which is so special for performing Shakespeare.”

It was during her training at The Oxford School of Drama where Louise developed a love of Shakespeare. She condenses his plays down to a manageable performance duration of two hours and strives to make her shows visually stunning, fast paced and full of action, so contemporary audiences of all ages and life experiences can relate.

Louise says, “Romeo and Juliet is the original teen drama that ends in tragedy.  Although the ending is extreme, similar storylines can be seen in modern soap operas such as Eastenders and Hollyoaks; it’s about teenagers not being listened to and being forced to conform to the rules of the adult world, along with gang warfare, all of which are still relevant today”.
